Being that I’ve been a very big fan of paper-based planners, it is no surprise that I became enticed by the Midori Traveler. I found out about it through one of Tracy Reinhardt’s a.k.a. Crazy Suburban Mom’s earlier You Tube posts. While I don’t use this wonderful cowhide leather buildable notebook as a traditional organizer, I do use it as a field book of sorts dedicated to my hummingbird observations e.g. sketches, feeding times, and general behaviors. I’ve gotten to know the principal characters of my garden fairly well. The brown Midori comes in two sizes (medium and pocket-sized versions) and I believe they just released one with a navy blue leather cover. You can also accessorize it to your liking (which I joyfully had done from day 1) :). I ordered mine from The Journal Shop in Spring 2014 and found the staff to be very pleasant to work with… I’m also very thankful for this since I had to rely on international purchase & shipping.
The only products I ever bought from Moleskine before this time were blank unlined notebooks for The Sketchbook Project (Brooklyn). I loved them for their simplicity, smooth pages, and light weight. After watching You Tube Chrissstttiiine’s positive review of the Moleskine Month Weekly Planner/Diary, I decided to check out their Month Daily version. Although it seems insane to be intentionally bombarded by new organizers all at once, I have been able to devise a plan of how I will use the lot in 2015 ;)! I wish I could have had a neatly packed shelf full of identical planners from one year to the next but I’m a butterfly of sorts; the beauty is in new discoveries. Yeahhh- a total commitment-phobe!.. Sanrio, Morning Glory, At-A-Glance, Kate Spade, Anya Hindmarch, Graphic Image, The Success Choice, Filofax, and who knows where inspiration will take me next???
June is when many companies release planner refills for the next year and I’m always looking for the perfect ones. Currently I have committed to the Filofax Daily pages. Last year I had enjoyed using The Success Choice system. While both have worked well for me, I’m always open-minded to try something different at the start of every new year (obviously hoping to find perfection). I’m a big fan of the Plannerisms blog and found a January 2010 post reviewing the Uncalendar system. I quickly zeroed in because it offers so much freedom in what you can record upon its pages! Besides writing down my daily schedule, I also prefer to record my meals, daily highlights including birthdays and such, communication going in and out, dreams, to dos, etc. I would love the option to doodle or graph as well. If you’re like me, go and check out the Uncalendar! My order arrived… I can’t wait to start 2015 on the right note and to customize it just the way I like =)!
Since this is my first year in caring for the hummingbirds, their departure to the South has hit me quite hard :(. I still feel blessed to see a few migratory females now and then but sharing my garden with them brought me great joy and gave me a new sense of purpose. In order to remedy my literal empty next syndrome, I’ve been dreaming up next season’s garden design with a dual purpose as both hummingbird haven by day and a moonlight garden by night. I have also lined up multiple art projects e.g. cross-stitch, paper crafts, and field journal, all hummingbird themed of course, to keep me busy while I look forward to their return and the great hope that I will have even more hummers next year :)!

While at Cape May, I also ventured into a cozy little spiritual store, named Good Scents, filled with many exciting new things I haven’t really seen anywhere else yet =). You can also find further info about the shop’s variety of incense here. In the back was a Leelah hoodie I instantly feel in love with! It was their Honey Love design (“Life is the Flower for which Love is the Honey”). Comfortable, soft, pretty, great for everyday (and for yoga!), and fits me very well. Later that week, I decided to explore the company’s site. All of a sudden, I remembered that one of my local boutiques also carries a few items from their clothing and accessories line (Leelah makes very distinctive-looking products). What I really love besides their clothing is their full-size spiral notebooks and mini books. It is perfect for the Filofax lover, like myself or someone who regularly gets lost in their imagination and enjoys doodling or journaling… all you have to do is re-punch the paper to fit your chosen organizer or slide a mini book into its planner pocket. As an aside, if you are a big fan of letter stationery, you can do the same. My daily organizer is an A5 so this works out perfectly =). Just wanted to share my thoughts especially with those who like customing/decorating their Filofax. I know how much joy that brings to me. I’ve featured a few of my favorites below and you can catch a “virtual” glimpse of Good Scents.
I’m a fan of Tracy Reinhardt on You Tube a.k.a. Crazy Suburban Mom. She introduced me and many others to the praiseworthiness of The Success Choice planner (which I love!) It keeps me in check and reminds me to take better care of myself and others, so what’s not to love about that? The covers are made of gorgeous sueded leather! I’m a proud owner of the chocolate brown with TSC inserts. I love the smell of it and even the natural imperfections in the leather! The best is when leather looks like it’s been carried around and loved. So every night, I can be seen penning in my thoughts of the day/week/month and hopefully able to check numerous accomplishments off. Must amp my routine up to earn those shiny gold stars!
The only small detail I would change about the binder are the ring sizes. I feel bad to even suggest this because they are some of the biggest rings in the organizer industry; however, just even a half inch would go a long way to perfectly fit every one of those refills. I’m aware that some people have been slightly bothered by the floppiness of the covers but I really don’t mind it because I always write against something which provides me with support.
My husband is a tech gadget guy but even he expressed an affinity towards this planner [he was also the one who excitedly opened the TSC package when it came, not me :/… ;)]. Also of note, it is more affordable than Filofax off-sale so you may want to check it out!
P.S. I usually write with Micron pens and it’s worked out very well with no bleeding through or smudging. You might want to invest in some Microns or something similar. I like black in 01 and 03 =). By the way, Microns also work well with most any other paper, whether it be Day Runner or Filofax.
My three favorite personal size planners other than those by Filofax are from Anya Hindmarch, Kate Spade, and Louis Vuitton. They are a bit pricy (some more so than others) but if you are a serious planner-keeper or “Filofaxer” looking for something a little different, you can consider these a worthwhile investment that you’re bound to find very nice to have around.

In the past few years I’ve gradually become increasingly disorganized =(; almost to the point of being unrecognizable. I didn’t remedy this realization immediately…
One day I was rifling through my drawers (like a crazy lady) looking for blank Christmas cards and found my old planners from early 2000. I remembered how much I used to love writing in them and having them close at hand like friends who wanted to see me succeed in the world. I never gave up on making lists but did sadly give up on them. They were too tiny to carry all that I wanted, even for 7″x 5″s; chalk it up to being a flaky Gemini. The organization I had worked for also kept me dependent on their FREE desk-sized calendars and 8.5″x 10″ Weekly Monthly planners (with the nice two page monthly spread) so there was no need to think outside the box.
Then, someone mentioned Filofax recently… and I thought back to how dull they were when they first came out =( yuk! Nothing like those ridiculously cute Kate Spades. Though something in me wanted more out of life; I wasn’t living the way I wanted to so I was led to You Tube to check out current day Filofaxs (gotta love You Tube). I couldn’t believe how nice they became; a real turnaround! I’m at present moment smitten with the Malden (Vintage Pink [sadly discontinued] & Purple [only available across the pond in A5 but Personal size still available in the U.S. in limited quantities]), Finsbury (Raspberry [currently still available]), Chameleon (Raspberry [also regrettably discontinued]), and Luxe in A5 (Black Currant [out in 2013]). What can I say? I’m a sucker for purple =). I’m also interested in converting a Filofax Compact into a functional wallet and thensome.
When I get the chance, I will post a special blog regarding my new Raspberry Finsbury and how I have it set up. I will also include other helpful references just in case you would like to begin your own Filofax journey. ‘Til next time…
