This year I have two extra events to attend than I normally do so I’ve been trying to plan ahead in terms of outfits I’d like to wear. Two family Christmas parties, a brunch meetup, and a business dinner. Another issue is that New York is awfully cold this time of year. My inspiration began with a cute crewneck sweater with an unexpected type of skirt pairing. The office holiday party is more formal so I went with another option. See photos for what I came up with after shopping my closet.

While this trend may not be for everyone, it’s certainly cute! I adore Abercrombie & Fitch’s take on it! I just placed an order for their high neck neoprene pleated dress with cut-out back in black… I was inspired to by the beautiful Miss Kelly Ferguson (KellyLovesBeauty1 of You Tube). Can’t wait to pair this with one of my more stylish stockings =), which sadly do not receive much wear ever (part of valuing your purchases includes using and enjoying them to the fullest). What’s terrific about this dress is that it goes with just about any style shoe and can be dressed up or down: leather boots, ballet flats, sandals of all types, Converse sneakers, or even those recently popular slip-on leather sneakers.
P.S. A&F has become my favorite denim brand! Their jeans fit me like a glove and better yet, no hemming needed despite the fact that I’m only 5’3.” Also, yayyy to their awesome occasional discounts! My favorite? High-rise destroyed skinnys in either the dark or medium wash, though I just placed an order for a light wash since I have way too few of those and I needed to just step out of my comfort zone ;)
I’ve known about Talbots for years. I never gave them a real chance when I was in my early 20s (currently in my 30s). Even back then they carried basics and American classics; however, I believed they were for the more mature woman (nothing wrong with this but it didn’t appeal to me at the time). Like JCrew and Banana Republic, over the years they have really revamped their designs in certain ways, so much it seems that I can sense a more inclusionary younger vibe.
My sister-in-law placed a teal Talbots tote two years ago on her wishlist which kind of planted a seed in my mind to look them up online. Shortly after, my husband received a catalog from them and I browsed through it, falling madly in love with a fitted button down denim shirt (something I’ve always wanted to own). I was quickly impressed by their quality, cut, and sizing (which fit me like a glove more than any other brand whether I was looking for a top, sweater, blazer, or pants). As for sizing, they have something for everyone unlike other brands which cater to select populations. My husband usually hates Christmas shopping especially at the mall, so I encouraged him to give our nearby Talbots a try. Also, their customer service whether in-store or over-the-phone is impeccable. Have you ever seen the way they package things too? Always with great care and professionalism. They get an A+++ from me! I just bought their Gallery Cable Flyaway Cardi in frost grey heather and had to also order one in black! Like any other girl who knows what’s good for her, anything which flatters your figure (picture you smiling at yourself in front of the mirror) is priceless =). Even better, both my sweaters were purchased at drumroll please… 40% off (it’s a steal)! I love my new cardis because they are beautifully made, thick, and soft to the touch. I’m planning to wear this to my upcoming Christmas gatherings with a festive Anthro top and dressier Talbot jeans (the Curvy Fit black rinse trouser jeans to be precise). I know you might find it odd that I mentioned Anthropologie and Talbots in the same sentence but they both have an important role to play in my closet. Anthro offers whimsical retro silhouettes while Talbots offers sophisticated refined beauty. That to me, when paired correctly creates a good fashion balance.
Give Talbots a chance; I guarantee you’ll want to become a new convert =)! For those who are long time Talbot lovers… I know you’re out there so comment below and tell me about your cherished finds ;)!
P.S. I’m nuts for their handbags, pearl necklaces, and shoes too! Below are several of my favorites from this season…
I was definitely keeping my fingers crossed that TOL would finally arrive at one of these sample sales. Yeah!!! I just want to say, Temperley, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE open a store in New York! I loved the Garnet Bags- they’re lust on chains…
I love the florals Rebecca Taylor uses in her designs and the way she drapes the fabrics. They are so feminine and the ruffles are so soft. Her designs remind me a little of Nanette Lepore. I wish I could have one of everything. Here are my top picks from yesterday’s Gilt sale…
Haha, now I’m going to chat about tees… again thinking warm thoughts on this snowy day… my husband introduced me to Topo Ranch. I received the cutest stocking stuffer from him (the “Hotdoggin” Tee). It depicts a rolly polly hot dog on a push reel lawn mower (see below). Palmer Cash and 80stees are other really cool retro tee companies.
A little flapper-girl-like. I don’t attend many formal events but if I did, this would be a great addition to my closet. I definitely don’t have anything quite like this fun number. As for Vera Wang, she is one of the best formal dress designers around. Kay Unger and Monique Lhuillier are also at the top of the list.
